A request for a “QA engineer” rarely means one role. Behind the same label are manual testers running exploratory tests, automation engineers building regression suites in CI/CD, and performance or security testing specialists. Their rates can differ by a factor of two, so before budgeting it pays to know which skill you actually need. Below we set out 2026 data from three perspectives: the provider, the specialist and the employer. Amounts are in Polish złoty; euro values use 4.30 PLN per EUR.

What does a QA engineer cost through staff augmentation in 2026?

The rates come from our body leasing rate benchmark for 2026, which separates manual testers from test automation engineers (QA Automation / SDET). They are net rates (excluding VAT) paid to the provider per hour of the specialist’s work. A day is 8 hours.

The rate covers the specialist’s pay, recruitment and vetting, a replacement guarantee, contract administration and the provider’s margin. Ranges for every role are on our pricing page. Rates for whole teams and outsourced testing models are covered separately in our overview of QA outsourcing rates.

What do testers earn on B2B and on an employment contract?

The most complete data is Bulldogjob’s IT Community Survey 2025 (data collected in January and February 2025). Employment contract amounts are net take-home pay; B2B amounts are net on the invoice.

RoleEmployment — average (take-home)Employment — medianEmployment senior — averageB2B — average (net on invoice)
Manual testerPLN 6,635PLN 6,020PLN 9,044PLN 12,942
QAPLN 8,513PLN 8,000PLN 10,850PLN 17,801
Automation testerPLN 9,538PLN 9,000PLN 12,592PLN 19,396

The B2B averages cover all experience levels. Over roughly 160 hours a month, the average manual tester invoice is about PLN 81 per hour and the average automation tester invoice about PLN 121 — before social security and income tax.

Why does an automation tester cost more than a manual tester?

According to the same survey, automation testers earn about 44% more than manual testers on employment contracts and about 50% more on B2B. Bulldogjob also notes that manual testers’ pay stops growing after about 10 years in the job, while automation specialists keep progressing.

The gap reflects the scope of work. An automation engineer writes and maintains test code, integrates it with CI/CD and designs the regression strategy — work close to that of a developer. Yet a manual tester who has mastered exploratory testing, accessibility and domain knowledge brings value automation cannot replace. We cover this in more detail in our article on the manual tester’s role in the AI era.

When budgeting a team, the decision is rarely “manual or automation”. More often it is about the mix: how much regression is worth automating and how much work needs human judgement.

For orientation: a team of two mid-level automation engineers and one senior manual tester costs about PLN 75,200 net a month through staff augmentation, using mid-range rates and about 160 hours a month (2 × PLN 24,800 plus PLN 25,600). That is a starting point for a conversation with a provider, not a quote — the final cost depends on availability, contract length and whether part of the work can be paid for on results.

Why does the provider’s rate differ from what the specialist earns?

The average automation tester invoice on B2B is about PLN 121 per hour, while a senior through staff augmentation costs PLN 180–250. Part of the gap exists because the survey average covers all experience levels; part reflects the costs a provider’s rate covers: recruitment, a replacement guarantee, administration, the risk of gaps between projects and margin.

Employment also costs more than the salary shows: employer contributions (about 21–22% of gross pay including the PPK pension plan), workplace and recruitment costs, and pay for holidays and sickness. The full calculation is in our article on total employer cost in Poland in 2026, and the specialist’s perspective in our B2B vs employment net pay comparison.

What raises a QA engineer’s rate?

In the testing projects we run, these factors most often raise the rate:

  • Automation in modern tools. Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and the ability to design a stable, maintainable test suite rather than just write scripts.
  • API and integration testing. More and more logic sits behind the interface, and testing it requires knowledge of protocols, contracts and test data.
  • Performance and security testing. Specialisations that are scarce on the market and usually priced at the top of the ranges.
  • Accessibility. Since the European Accessibility Act took effect in June 2025, demand has grown for testers who know WCAG and screen readers.
  • CI/CD and test infrastructure. The ability to run tests in a pipeline and shorten regression time.
  • Domain experience. Banking, insurance and healthcare require knowledge of processes and regulation.

ISTQB certification is often required in job ads and gives a team a shared vocabulary, but on its own it rarely moves a rate between levels. In Poland, the Foundation Level exam costs PLN 850 net according to the SJSI price list.

On-site work usually raises the rate by 10–15%, and contracts shorter than 3 months by 15–25%.

How does a Polish tester compare with the German market?

According to Freelancer-Kompass 2025 (freelancermap), the average German IT freelancer charges EUR 95 per hour, or about EUR 760 per day. A senior test automation engineer from Poland through staff augmentation costs EUR 335–465 per day — roughly 39–56% less. For a senior manual tester (EUR 260–335 per day), the gap is about 56–66%.

This compares a provider’s rate with the average rate of a directly hired IT freelancer, without an intermediary’s costs — and the German average covers all IT specialisations, not only testers.

How do you check that a rate matches the tester’s level?

Before accepting a senior rate, check:

  • Test strategy design. Ask the candidate which parts of a specific feature they would test automatically, which manually and which not at all — and why.
  • A review of existing tests. A senior automation engineer should spot flaky, redundant and poorly designed tests.
  • A bug report. A good report includes steps, expected and actual results and an assessment of impact — a quick test of communication.
  • Project references. The provider should be able to say where and for how long the specialist worked.

If a candidate priced as a senior struggles with these tasks, discussing a mid-level rate is justified. It is also worth agreeing a trial period after which both sides confirm the specialist’s level based on the first weeks of work.

When does staff augmentation of a tester pay off, and when managed QA?

Staff augmentation works when you have your own testing process and need additional people — before a major release, while building regression automation, or to cover a team member’s absence. When you want the provider to take responsibility for the quality outcome, measured through KPIs and SLAs, managed QA services are the better model. For a stable role lasting years, direct hiring is usually cheaper.
